We can also access His healing power through prayer. I’ll never forget an experience that Sister Nelson and I had about three decades ago with President Spencer W. Kimball and his beloved Camilla. We were in Hamilton, New Zealand, for a large conference with the Saints. I was not a General Authority at that time. I had been invited to participate in this and similar meetings in other Pacific Islands while serving as general president of the Sunday School. And as a doctor of medicine, I had attended President and Sister Kimball for many years. I knew each of them very well—inside and out. A Saturday evening cultural program had been prepared for this conference by local youth of the Church. Unfortunately, President and Sister Kimball both became very ill, each with a high fever. After receiving priesthood blessings, they rested at the nearby home of the president of the New Zealand Temple. President Kimball asked his counselor, President N. Eldon Tanner, to preside at the cultural event and to excuse President and Sister Kimball. Sister Nelson went with President and Sister Tanner and other leaders to the event, while President Kimball’s secretary, Brother D. Arthur Haycock, and I watched over our feverish friends. While President Kimball was sleeping, I was quietly reading in his room. Suddenly President Kimball was awakened. He asked, “Brother Nelson, what time was this evening’s program to begin?” “At seven o’clock, President Kimball.” “What time is it now?” “It’s almost seven,” I replied. President Kimball quickly said, “Tell Sister Kimball we are going!” I checked President Kimball’s temperature. It was normal! I took Sister Kimball’s temperature. It was also normal! They quickly dressed and got into an automobile. We were driven to the stadium of the Church College of New Zealand. As the car entered the arena, there was a very loud shout that erupted spontaneously. It was most unusual! After we took our seats, I asked Sister Nelson about that sudden sound. She said that when President Tanner began the meeting, he dutifully excused President and Sister Kimball because of illness. Then one of the young New Zealanders was called upon to pray. With great faith, he gave what Sister Nelson described as a rather lengthy but powerful prayer. He so prayed: “We are 3,000 New Zealand youth. We are assembled here, having prepared for six months to sing and dance for Thy prophet. Wilt Thou heal him and deliver him here!” After the “amen” was pronounced, the car carrying President and Sister Kimball entered the stadium. They were identified immediately, and instantly everyone shouted for joy! I had witnessed the healing power of the Lord! I had also witnessed revelation as received and responded to by His living prophet! I recognize that, on occasion, some of our most fervent prayers may seem to go unanswered. We wonder, “Why?” I know that feeling! I know the fears and tears of such moments. But I also know that our prayers are never ignored. Our faith is never unappreciated. I know that an all-wise Heavenly Father’s perspective is much broader than is ours. While we know of our mortal problems and pain, He knows of our immortal progress and potential. If we pray to know His will and submit ourselves to it with patience and courage, heavenly healing can take place in His own way and time. Russell M. Nelson, "Jesus Christ—the Master Healer," Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2005, 85-86. ______________________________________________ Deseret News In 1976, Dr. Nelson, then general Sunday School president, and his wife, Sister Dantzel Nelson, accompanied President Kimball and his wife, Sister Camilla Kimball, on a historic trip to the South Pacific. They witnessed miracles, including President Kimball’s participation in member meetings, government visits and press interviews despite a sudden and intense onset of bilateral pneumonia.

After the microphone went out during a devotional at the Provo Missionary Training Center on Tuesday, Aug. 19, many missionaries said they received a special witness from the Holy Ghost and a strengthening of their testimonies. The devotional with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was interrupted by technical difficulties when the microphone and sound system unexpectedly shut off. This came as Elder Andersen was speaking on increasing faith, and just after he said that faith will be tested. Just moments before, he had said: “When you are doing important things, things get in your way.” With the sound system down, Elder Andersen invited the MTC choir to sing its opening song again, “We’ll Bring the World His Truth.” After the first verse from the choir, he stood and directed everyone to stand and join in the singing. Said Sister Rebekah Bennett, preparing to serve in the Japan Nagoya Mission: “After we sang again as the choir, it became clear to me why it happened. In my opinion, it was because God needed us to listen.” Despite 2,000 missionaries filling the gym, every single missionary was focused on Elder Andersen’s words as the Apostle continued without the help of technology. And their hearts were opened to accept his message. ... Sister Bennett said she had never felt the Spirit of God so strongly in her entire life. And she wasn’t alone. Other missionaries who sat in the back of the gym were miraculously able to hear Elder Andersen’s testimony. ... Elder William Carlson, called to the Korea Seoul South Mission, said even though he was far away from Elder Andersen, he could feel God’s love through him. “I just felt like every single person in this room, God was telling them that He loves and cares about them enough to let them experience hearing [Elder Andersen] speak in person,” he said. “And I could tell that was God speaking through him.” Sister Rachel Richards, called to the Bulgaria/Greece Mission, said the experience taught her that when things get hard or when things get in the way of her missionary efforts, she can keep going, keep smiling and keep bearing a witness that Jesus Christ lives. “I am grateful to have been in the room that day and to have felt the Spirit testify that we can do any hard thing, even the impossible, if we rely on God,” she said. ... Elder Andersen told the missionaries it is important to remember the spiritual experiences they have — and to store them up in a reservoir — so they can pull from that reservoir during difficult times. He also said “a mission is full of miracles if you allow it to be,” pointing to God’s promise in 2 Nephi 27:23 that He is a God of miracles. In one of the videos, Jason Ebert shared how he saw miracles in his own mission, through setting goals with the Lord and then acting in faith to accomplish those goals. “He sets you up to see miracles,” he said.

Miracles are proof that all of us, as children of God, can place total and ultimate faith in the Father and the Son. In the Old Testament, we read about a faithful widow who, following the inspired instructions of the prophet Elisha, gathered as many empty pots as she could and poured oil from her one small pot into each of them. The oil filled them all, running out only when the widow ran out of pots. (See 2 Kings 4:1–7.) When sharing that story, Sister Christofferson likes to point out that the Lord’s blessing of oil for the widow expanded to fill all the capacity she had to receive it and presumably would have continued had she had more pots—suggesting that the Lord is willing to give what we are prepared to receive. ... Miracles also teach us that prayers and priesthood blessings need to be instilled with faith, founded in obedience and worthiness, and guided by the Holy Ghost. “Miracles, or these extraordinary manifestations of the power of God, are not for the unbeliever,” taught President Brigham Young. Rather, “they are to console the Saints, and to strengthen and confirm the faith of those who love, fear, and serve God.” ... In Spanish Fork, Utah, USA, Chad Groesbeck woke up early one day in March 2015 with a spiritual impression that something had happened to his daughter Jennifer (“Jenny”). Her phone was broken, so Chad could not call her. He felt that he should leave home and look for her. Driving the streets his daughter might have traveled on her way home after visiting him the previous night, he came upon the scene of a traffic accident. There, he saw Jenny’s red vehicle overturned and partially submerged in the Spanish Fork River. Before he arrived, four police officers first on the scene had heard someone crying for help. Responding to the cry, they rushed into the river to upright the car. There, they found that Jenny had been killed in the previous night’s crash and that her 18-month-old baby, Lily, was hanging upside down in her car seat. Unconscious but clinging to life, Lily was rushed to the hospital. “Doctors warned the family that she could face brain damage, paralysis, or other long-term effects as a result of the 14 hours she spent suspended upside down in her car seat in the frigid SUV.” But five days later, she was released—healthy and whole. Officer Tyler Beddoes, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had no doubt that the voice calling for help that he and the other officers heard that morning came from the other side of the veil. “I was really starting to lose my faith and my religious background until Baby Lily,” said Officer Beddoes, whose faith and religious conviction had been weakened by pain associated with the dark side of police work. “We rescued Baby Lily that day and heard the voice, but in reality, she rescued me, and the voice rescued me and my faith.” Groesbeck family members also attributed the mysterious call for help and the baby’s survival to divine intervention. “We can’t deny it,” said Jill Sanderson, Jenny’s sister. Officer Beddoes said the experience “changed my outlook on life and the spiritual realm as well.” He affirmed that “angel encounters” occur frequently. “I think that if we really open our eyes to it, it happens all the time.” ... Sight saved, life spared, faith restored, prayer answered—all signs that God remains a God of miracles. We rejoice to hear of such miracles today, but what about when our miracle does not come? As we study biblical miracles, we see that not all lepers were healed, not all the blind received their sight, and not all who died were raised. Some were made whole; some were not. Now, as then, those who do not receive their miracle should not feel abandoned or lesser in God’s sight. The miracle we hope for may not come in this life, but that is not a sign of God’s rejection, disapproval, or lack of love for us. Rather, He may want us to learn endurance, patience, trust, and understanding, “for God needs brave sons and daughters who are willing to be polished when in His wisdom that is His will.” As we embrace God’s plan to prepare us for eternity, we may at times need to exercise the faith not to be healed.
